Jang Eun Cho. MD
I am a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist who uses both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to evaluate, diagnose and treat a wide variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, panic disorders, ADHD as well as behavioral dysregulation and school difficulties.

As a bilingual and bi-cultural psychiatrist, I focus on how cultural background, individual family dynamics, and ethnicity affect one’s life trajectory, mental well-being as well as personal and work relationships, especially in immigrant families of diverse backgrounds. It is my goal to help the patients and their families to understand the issues through the lens of cross cultural psychiatry in a solution-oriented perspective and to become more confident participants of their own lives.

“Advocacy and education for our own community is crucial in raising a healthy new generation”

Dr. Cho’s Story

I was born and raised in Korea but moved to America at fourteen years old to attend a boarding school, then college, and then medical school.

I decided to specialize in child psychiatry after my experience one summer as a SAT tutor in Korea, working with young Korean teens who were studying in America, just as I had done. During that summer, I somehow became an accidental confidant for these teens’ struggles and challenges-topics, ranging from academic pressure to bi-cultural identity and family expectations to worries about the future and many more - topics both common for all teens, and unique to young international students. I found myself oddly invigorated and inspired. I could also empathize easily as many of the struggles overlapped with mine.

I never forgot that feeling through five years of psychiatry training. Since then, I have been a strong advocate of Asian American mental health, especially mental health of children and adolescents.

Dr. Cho’s Experience

As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, a former international student, and a first generation Asian American, my passion is to promote resilience and empowerment of Asian Americans and young international students in America:

I believe in connecting and sharing experiences as a way to boost and empower each other. I am sharing my own experiences, both struggles and triumphs, so that I can empower and inspire other Asian Americans and young international students who are currently navigating their own journey in America.

Dr. Cho’s Approach

Shame and stigma are two biggest barriers in seeking help for Asian American children and young adults. Other factors include access to health care, difference in symptomatology, and lack of psychoeducation for families. My own experience with Asian students is that much more time and efforts are needed to educate and engage the family to have a successful treatment. However, it also means that working with Asian families can be very rewarding.
